Hamlet

S4s.

The essay question we will be addressing at the end of the play is:

"Hamlet can be considered to be both heroic and cowardly. Show how Shakespeare makes his audience aware of both qualities and discuss how they affect the audience’s response to his fate."

As we continue, please have this in mind. When is Hamlet a hero? When is he weak? When is he brave? When is he a coward?

There are several key sequences we will focus on, but please be aware of how we can think of Hamlet like this all the way through.

Tess of the d'Urbervilles - Tess's Purity

I need to have a closer look at Slideshare because it's messed around with the font and formatting of this document. Nonethless, it's a useful read for us.

Reading Group Booklist

Tess of the D'Urbervilles

Just a quick link to the BBC Tess site where you'll find some good overviews of the characters.

This is the Wikipedia page for the novel, and is a good repository of information for our purposes. Brief and easy to understand, and well worth half an hour of your time.

Finally, this is the Spark Notes site for the novel, where you'll stumble over all sorts of interesting and pertinent information. For those of you at the absolute cutting-edge, there's a downloadable eBook, which is supported by most smart-phones. The website is free, the eBook is not.
